pasco county turf war
Overheard, a response to a woman’s comment about being from Pasco County:
But I ain’t from no Wesley Chapel - I’m from New Port Richey!
The comment is not in the context of the original conversation, but I assure you it makes as much sense now.
I do spend most Sunday afternoons in Wesley Chapel, but I rarely leave my in-laws’ home; I don’t think I’ve been to New Port Richey in five years. For those reasons I don’t feel qualified to decipher exactly what was meant by the comment.
Sticks of Fire is a firm believer in the One Bay, One Love concept, an idea that should extend beyond the traditional, traditionally silly Tampa/St. Pete rivalry.
That being said, can anyone shed any light on this apparent tension? Is this a sign of a brewing Battle for Pasco, or shall I chalk it up to Things People Say?

Just a bunch of braindead rednecks up there anyway. Better than the tweakers in Plant City though, and way better than those wrinkled old freaks in Bradenton but still New Port Richey? Might as well give up and move to Kenneth City!
(offhand the NPR centrism may be similar to a friend who refuses to go east of US19. She stays of the “westside” of st pete, convinced this is better.)

NPR’s think they are somehow “originals,” whereas Wesley Chapelians (ettes, ers, ites, ans…) as considered newbies from Tampa. This, combined with the above referenced “east side/west side” (of the county) attitude, is what I think this nutnik means.
Of course, ask somebody from Port Richey about those people from NEW Port Richey and then take a step back.

There are Pasco County lifers - the types whose granddaddies grew up in the area. They don’t believe in toothbrushing and fancy book learnin’. Then there are those of us who recently moved in - mostly the Wesley Chapel area - and we bring up the median IQ along with property values and taxes. That NPR woman was just keepin’ it real.
God bless her.

Um, gotta say, Kate, we spent 6 years in Pasco, namely Zephyrhills (1year inside the city limits, the other 5 in the country). Say what you may but we encountered mainly friendly people who live and let live. As a gay couple who refrains from making being gay the MAIN THING about us, we found that attitude surprising and refreshing.
Yankees apparently are born with superior attitudes and the firm belief that every redneck southerner is entitled to their nasty opinions of them.
…and it’s all the transplants who drive like ass****s and then blame everyone who has been driving around on these shi**y roads all these years for the crappy traffic.
Want worse? Go live in Boston.
…nothing personal, Kate.
