July 20, 1986 – Archbishop Pio Laghi, Pope John Paul II’s personal representative to the United States, delivers a message praising matrimony to nearly 7,000 people attending the Worldwide Marriage Encounter at the Sun Dome. In his letter, the Pope lauds Worldwide Marriage Encounter for “inspiring married couples with a true Christian vision of their vocation to marriage and family life,” while warning against the dangers of materialism and consumerism. Bishop W. Thomas Larkin of the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg described the convention mass as the largest religious event in the history of the diocese.
