Verizon

OK, now that I am leaving the company I feel ok disclosing that I work for Verizon.

Please, with the hissing and the booing ok?

It is like telling people you work for Visa or the IRS or something. I leave at the end of the year after volunteering to get laid off. Several days after I volunteered the company released the information that they are discontinuing their pension plan for non-union employees. This received some media attention (in part because because the company told the media before it told the employees). A couple of days ago I got an email via the internal mail system, I talked the to writer and he confirms it is authentic. Regardless of what you think about the situation you have to love the big hairy ones this guy showed by sending the email in the first place. If you don’t think companies doing this affects us all remember that people without pension are going to rely on Social Security and Medicare when they retire.

Start saving your money now, if you’re not already. We can’t rely on pension plans and companies’ retirement plans anymore, and who knows if we’ll be able to rely on Social Security in the future. This is so depressing and so, so wrong.

Good for you! I left Verizon 5 years ago and never looked back.

There is a nice privately held company that isn’t responsible to shareholders with decent benefits and a nice 401k/pension plan called Bright House Networks that is usually hiring…

    :)

And BH generally doesn’t trash the landscape whilst installing new technology….
